DEC 19, 2022

Changes and New Services and Improvements for KCCB Campgrounds for 2023

Kossuth County Campground Changes for 2023

The Kossuth County Conservation Board will be implementing several new services and improvements for the 2023 camping season.  The changes will provide expanded recreational opportunities and new services for campers. The changes include a 14-day stay limit, a credit card payment option, an online reservation option, new camping rates, redesigned camping sites on the north side of Smith Lake and a renovated restroom facility at the north side of Smith Lake.

Listed below are the new services and changes.

 1)  Stay Limit- Starting in 2023, campers at Burt Lake, Smith Lake South campground and Siems Park campground will have a 14-day maximum stay limit. The stay limit will be in effect May 15-September 11. Once a camper’s 14 days is reached, they will be required to vacate their camper/equipment from the park for a minimum of 72 hours before returning. Before May 14th and after September 11th, all sites are walk-in with no stay limit.

 2) Credit Card Option- Starting in January 2023,  KCCB will  be accepting credit cards as payment for KCCB services and facility rentals including paying camping fees. A credit card machine will be located at the nature center office. In addition, KCCB staff will have a mobile card reader available and campers can pay online.

3) Online Reservation Option-Starting in January campers will have the option of reserving sites at Siems Park and Smith Lake south campgrounds online for the 2023 camping season. Online reservations will be accepted beginning January 12th at 8:00 A.M. Reservable campsites will be available from May 14-September 11. The maximum stay limit will be 14 days with the same 72-hour vacancy as required for walk-in sites. If a reservable site is vacant, a walk-in camper can still use it. However if a reservation is received for the site, the reservation takes precedence and the walk-in camper will have to vacate the site. All reservations can be made now, but no later than 5 days in advance of occupying a site. The 14-day stay limit is applicable if a reservable site is utilized as a walk-in, reservable or combination thereof. At each park, 50% of the electrical sites will be reservable. The remaining sites will be walk-in only sites. All sites will be clearly marked at the site post as walk-in only or reservable. The reservation system will not be in effect for any tent camping sites. See below for instructions on how to make a reservation.

 4) Camping Rates. The camping rates have changed at all KCCB campgrounds. At Siems Park, Burt Lake Park and Smith Lake south, all camping rate options are a per night fee. The fee is $15/night for electrical sites and $10/night for tent sites. There will no longer be a weekly rate, monthly rate or extra night option. If you pay by card a 4% convenience will be added to help cover our credit card processing fees. If you make online reservations, you will be charged an additional $4 per reservation that goes to mycountyparks.com for maintenance of the website.

At the full hookup sites at the north side of Smith Lake the new rates are $20/night, $500/month or $2,000/season (May- October).

 5) North campground Seasonal Rate option. The KCCB will again be offering a Seasonal Rate option for the 2023 camping season for the north full hookup sites. The Seasonal Rate is $2,000 for May 1-October 31. All sixteen sites will be available in a lottery draw held in March. Any sites not chosen at the March lottery draw will be available on a first-come first-served basis. See the Smith Lake Seasonal Site Campsite Application for details on obtaining a Seasonal Site.

6) New Site Design for the Smith Lake North camping sites. The KCCB staff has redesigned the layout of the north full hookup sites. The new design will make the sites more attractive and user friendly for campers. The previous site arrangement, which included two circles with six sites at each circle have been eliminated. The two previous circles have been replaced by one large camping area with 11 single back in sites. An additional site was added near the lake. The new sites average 40’ long x 15’ wide. In addition to providing full hookup services, each site will also have a picnic table and fire pit available for use. The new sites will be completed in the spring for the 2023 camping season. See the north campground map for site details.

7) Restroom renovation. The existing restrooms attached to the open shelter on the north side of Smith Lake will be renovated in the spring of 2023. The two existing restrooms will be remodeled into one unisex ADA compliant facility with a toilet, sink and shower.
